Application developers must also be more transparent. When exporting and assigning activities or services, Android 12 requires more transparency. For example, it is now impossible for an app in the background to launch a service in the foreground.
The MAC address of the phone can no longer be accessed from within an app.
A better user experience
More roundnessAndroid 12 comes with a big aesthetic change
driven by Google’s new design philosophy: Material You. This redesign wants to offer as many customizations as possible so that the interface corresponds as much as possible to the desires of the user. The accent colors adapt to the dominant color of the screen background for more immersion. However, this feature is initially reserved only for the Google Pixel.
This is the case especially on the volume bar or screen brightness, both wider, but also with the multitasking screen, with the widgets or with the pop-up screens in the settings.
Note also an important reorganization of the tiles of the quick settings, while the lock screen has also been entitled to changes. The time, for example, is displayed in a larger size when you have no notifications to further enhance your peace of mind.
Photo and video encoding/decoding
Android 12 brings a new layer of video decoding to make HEVC and AVC video formats work at all levels of the system, including in applications that do not support it natively. Using this format improves file compression and saves storage space.
For still images, the system adds support for the AV1 Image File (AVIF) format. En résulte une qualité d’image bien supérieure à taille équivalente.
For example, a video calling application could integrate customized ringtones to identify a caller through haptic feedback. This feature can also be used in games to simulate the granularity of a terrain for example in a racing game. Note also that the vibration can be redirected to the controller when a joystick is plugged in.
Spatial audio is also supported to handle up to 24 audio channels (previously eight). On a related topic, Bluetooth audio management should also see a nice improvement with Android 12.
Better management of verified links
Currently, if you open a Twitter link from the Facebook app, Android will ask if you intend to open the link with the Twitter app or via your browser. Android 12 DP3 has simplified the procedure by automating this system. From now on, if you have the right app installed on your smartphone, the links will open automatically in the app, without going through your phone’s web browser.
The display of notifications has been redesigned to bring a breath of modernity, as previewed before the launch of Android 12. In addition to a general redesign with transparency effects and new icons, transitions and animations have been improved for more fluidity.
Useful to know how many mails you have received without having to scroll down the list. It is also possible to fine-tune the notifications for each application to know what type of notification it is allowed to send: email notification, default notification, silent notification or real time notification.
Widget management simplified
To facilitate the search for widgets, the widget selection screen now shows a list of different applications. Each of them can then be scrolled down to show the different widgets available, organized in a horizontal carousel, as before.
Useful if you have many applications installed. Moreover, Android 12 will also integrate widget recommendations.
A game mode
Like many other brands, Google is integrating a new game menu into Android 12 (discovered in DP2). Although unavailable by default, this screen allows you to quickly manage some of the phone’s settings, such as activating Do Not Disturb mode or an “FPS” option that should improve performance in games. There is also a quick access to streaming on YouTube, to take or record the screen.
Its presence in a “Google” package and not “Android” suggests that this would be an exclusive Pixel.
WiFi sharing simply
To facilitate the sharing of your WiFi code, Android 12 integrates a QR Code system directly from the WiFi menu of the settings. Even simpler, it is possible to use proximity sharing to allow anyone to connect in a few clicks without having to copy the code or scan anything.
Until now, a single click performed these two actions while a double click replayed the video in full screen.
It is also possible to temporarily hide the floating window in order to easily consult the content that could be underneath.
A new one-handed mode similar to the iPhone
In Android 12, Google has integrated a one-handed mode very similar to what Apple offers on the iPhone. By sliding your finger down on the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, the display shrinks and goes down to the bottom half of the screen. L’écran revient automatiquement à sa taille normale après quelques secondes d’inactivité (ou en refaisant le geste inverse).
You just have to make the gesture to enjoy it directly.
Already available on many smartphones, the extended makes a timid entry on Android 12. Inaccessible from the start, this feature can be activated via an ADB command, adding a button when taking a screenshot to scroll through the image recording. This feature is still uncertain for the final version of the update.
Still on the subject of screenshots, Android 12 DP3 has added a welcome little feature. In addition to the default font proposed for annotations, it is possible to choose from several other writing fonts.
As part of Project Mainline to separate Android blocks from major updates, Android 12 integrates the ART module into the Google Play system to allow simplified updates to this application execution layer. Improvements can thus be made to manage application execution performance or memory management without requiring a major system update.
The different device formats are also better managed. After the optimization of the tablet format and that of smartphones with foldable screens, it is now the turn of TVs to be optimized. The Android 12 preview for Android TV is also available to improve the experience of applications on this platform.
Many other optimizations have been made to the system, such as improved gesture navigation to avoid false positives (or false negatives). We also think of the hibernation of applications not used for a long time to free up storage, the fact that your smartphone can be used as a car key or remote control on Android TV.
