Some Android smartphones have a standard volume limiter which, as its name suggests, blocks the maximum volume level. Once activated, it becomes impossible to increase the volume of your headphones beyond this limit.
However, there is a solution to deactivate the volume limiter on an Android smartphone.
Prolonged listening to music can be hazardous to your hearing
In recent years, protecting your hearing has become a priority public health issue. Several studies carried out in 2004 showed that prolonged listening to music at high volume posed a risk to hearing.
The state has therefore introduced new standards to protect the hearing of smartphone and MP3 player users. Specifically, phone manufacturers have been forced to reduce the maximum volume of their devices.
The sound power output of MP3 players and other devices that play music must not exceed 100 dB(A). Moreover, the representatives of the manufacturers of electronic products have committed themselves to the Brussels authorities to set up a default volume level when the devices are switched on. This threshold has been set at 85 decibels with the weighting or dB(A).
But that’s not all. When the user wants to increase the listening volume above this threshold, a warning message is automatically displayed. You’ve probably already seen it on your smartphone screen: prolonged listening at a high volume can damage your hearing.
Disable the volume limit feature
As explained earlier, smartphones are now limited to 100 decibels. In addition to this device, some manufacturers, including Samsung, equip their phones with a volume limiter that allows you to block the sound under the threshold of 100 decibels.
You can reduce up to 70% the maximum volume that your device can actually produce. But be careful, sometimes this function is activated by default. If you find that the sound of your smartphone is much too low, you may need to disable this limit.
- Open the settings of your Android phone
- Click on the sounds and vibrations section
- Scroll down the window and click on volume
- In the new window you will see all the sliders to adjust the volume of your smartphone (multimedia content, ring alarm, call)
- Press the menu button on the top right (3 dots)
- Click on the switch to deactivate the volume limiter
- If the switch is blue it means that the function is active
- By clicking on PIN it is possible to create a password to protect your settings This option is particularly useful to protect your children’s hearing
Be careful not to lose this PIN code. If you forget it, you will not be able to change the settings of the volume limiter of your mobile. You will then have no other choice than to reset your device and delete all your data to remove this password.
