During the Snap Partner Summit, Snap unveiled a new unexpected product. After the camera glasses, here is the camera drone. Pixy gathers all the Snapchat photo know-how in a small device that follows you to immortalize your moments.
Snap likes to surprise. After the Spectacles connected glasses launched a few years ago, then declined in different models, here is a new way to take your daily life in pictures under a different light.
At the Snap Partner Summit held Thursday, the firm with the little ghost presented Pixy, a funny yellow flying square shaped like a miniature drone. With its four propellers, it can rise in front of you and follow you to take pictures and film you.
A flying paparazzi
It might have looked like a joke, but it’s not. Pixy is already available in France, and it uses the codes of Snapchat with its bright yellow and its photography skills. Because Snap has decided to rely on the know-how of the camera of its application to allow you to immortalize your important moments, alone or with friends. All this while giving you a new perspective and taking in the sights. Because with Spectacles, it was your point of view that was in the spotlight. Now you’re the star.
This “flying camera,” as Snap calls it, fits in your pocket and will rise on demand. With the tap of a button, its four rotors turn on and Pixy flies away in four pre-recorded flight patterns: orbiting for a 360-degree view, hovering in front of you, following you wherever you go, or simply without control to record around you (reveal mode). And Pixy promises to land in your outstretched hand at the end of its flight. Because it is your gestures that will tell it what to do, there is no remote control available.
The videos are transferred and saved automatically in Snapchat Memories. You can then edit them, add Lenses or music (videos have no sound). You can add quick features like Hyperspeed, Bounce, 3D Orbit, etc. Then all you have to do is share them on Snapchat in chat, in stories, on Spotlight or elsewhere on other platforms.
Beware, Pixy is not rain or wind resistant, even a light breeze. Hold your arm out in front of you at eye level, with Pixy on your palm, and it will take off based on the height of your head. It follows the location of your head and body to steer and return. The camera’s white LED will flash to start filming.
Pixy price and availability
Initially, Pixy is available in the U.S. and France while supplies last for 274.99 euros on Snapchat’s website or on the dedicated Pixy website Pixy. Additional accessories are available (rechargeable battery, charger, bumper, carrying strap, etc.).
For France, it is obviously necessary to follow the recommendations of the civil aviation as a drone in flight.
